NIA

NIA
is a blend of martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It is an expressive fitness and awareness movement program filled with depth, power, grace and clarity. Nia offers a holistic approach to health. By blending movement concepts and theories from a diversity of cultures, NIA offers an experience that embraces individual creativity, self-inquiry, and free expression. The stillness and concentration of tai-chi, the dynamic poses of yoga, the explosive power of martial arts and the grace and spontaneity of modern and ethnic dance make it possible to stay fit and reap holistic benefits - a sense of well-being that filters into every aspect of your life!

NIA is fun . . . healing . . . graceful . . . challenging . . . passionate . . .

Anything but dull, the Nia Technique is a radical departure from impact aerobics, cross training shoes and treadmills. It relies on emotions and creativity, allowing you to release what is inside. Alluring, powerful, soft and theatrical, Nia brings out your real spirit. It is as much an exercise for the soul as it is for the legs, arms, feet and hands.

Nia encourages profound communication between the dance and the self. Uninhibited, you are free to add your own personal style to the routines. People who lead sedentary lives or work in structured office environments love Nia because it ignites their passion. There is no right or wrong way to do Nia.

Nia builds a sense of self-confidence and pride. It embodies many emotions - it's gutsy, refined, full-bodied and aloof. Rest assured, if you do Nia with love and consistency, your muscles will become strong, flexible and balanced. Your heart will get stronger. Your coordination and gracefulness will improve. A time for play, meditation and simply feeling good, Nia prepares you to step back into your everyday life rejuvenated, relaxed and ready.

Nia is a path to condition, heal and express your self through movement and sensation. A dynamic blend of dance arts, martial arts and healing arts, Nia revolutionized the face of fitness in 1983, and has since changed millions of lives and bodies across the globe. Balancing technical precision with free-form expression, Nia brings the body, mind, emotions and spirit to optimum health through music, movement and self-expression, guided by the sensation of Pleasure.

Nia is designed for any body. It is ageless and limitless, transformational and effective for every person everywhere, from athletes, dancers and fitness instructors, to children, special needs groups and the elderly. With the philosophy, Through Movement We Find Health, Nia addresses the whole person through music and movement integrated from nine traditional movement forms.

Dancing Through Life: The Nine Movement Forms of Nia

Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Arts: Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais®

Through Nia practice, you learn to foster awareness of your life through physical sensation, allowing the Voice of The Body to direct your actions and choices, leading to a general state of what Nia calls Dynamic Ease. Practiced barefoot to music, each person is invited to move at his or her own level of intensity, adapting the 52 Moves to their body potential at any given moment. While delivering cardiovascular, whole-body conditioning, Nia creates a loving relationship with one's own body by tuning into The Body’s Way: the innate intelligence of the body.
